The Language of Dancing
October 22 Workshop with Hanna Satterlee
As Part of the "Dance Nights" Series at The Flynn
Dance Nights is an 8-week workshop series curated by ANIMAL Dance, Hosted by the Flynn and Supported by the Vermont Arts Council.
"The Language of Dancing" Workshop description:
The body speaks through gestures, posture, pace and shape. Movement is a form of expression. This workshop is a study on how movement can help us to better get to know ourselves, understand each other and connect to the world around us. Through thoughtful tactics and structured scores, we will play with spontaneous & impermanent dance creations, with the body as our tool and improvisation as our mechanism. We will practice embodying imagined and real-life images, physically telling abstract stories, and “trying on” the personality of each another’s moving form. Please bring a journal and pen, and an extra shirt layer that can be shared with other participants in the group.
Wednesday, October 22
Open Level 5:45pm
Advanced 7:15pm

Class sessions will encourage a deeper understanding of the body, mind and soul in the natural and social world. In-class and (optional) take-home experiences will be designed to awaken an awareness of one's body through movement, breath, sensorial study and relationship to space, place and environment. We will invite curiosity in discovering how the body can feel, touch, taste, smell and see through creative embodied assignments. Emphasis is on the importance of proper alignment, energy flow, flexibility and strength, body/breath coordinations, tension relief exercises, and simple body-care techniques for optimal health and harmony.

Contemplative Dance Practice
Open Level Workshop
River Arts, Morrsiville VT
Wednesday August 20th, 2-3:30pm
$30
Drawing on the form of Contemplative Dance Practice, founded by Barbara Dilley, these workshops will help us to integrate inner and outer experiences, alone and together. We will spend time individually and collectively to experience, witness, process and share our current state of being using the body and breath as our guides.
Guided by dance artist Hanna Satterlee, the map of practices in each session will include: silent meditation, personal awareness movement practice, and a shared movement practice called Open Space. After a timed set in each of these three practices, we will have the opportunity to journal to reflect on our own experience, and conclude with discussion and sharing observations with one another.
Open Level. Must Pre-Register
Open to all bodies ages 18+, no movement experience necessary. Familiarity with silent meditation or introspective practices will be helpful. Please bring your own journal and pen, and a meditation pillow and/or yoga mat if you'd like one.
Dance Improvisation: Practicing Presence and Performance
Intermediate/Advanced Workshop
River Arts, Morrsiville VT
Wed August 20, 4-5:30pm
$30
Come explore moving and dancing from an unplanned body. With thoughtful tactics and structured scores we will workshop multiple ways and styles of performing presence and cultivating connection beyond our own somatic experience.
We will play with spontaneous & impermanent dance creations, with the body as our tool and improvisation as our mechanism. Dance improvisation gives us practice in both being awake to making choices in the moment, as well as practice in learning to recognize the structure of the whole while simultaneously listening to our own loud inner experience.
With Hanna as the guide, we will experiment with such concepts on our own, collaborate playfully with one another, and spend time observing each others’ in-the-moment creations.
If the only thing constant is change, let us practice being awake and ready to participate.
Intermediate/Advanced. Must Pre-register.
Ages 16+, experience recommended (this does not have to be formal dance training, but each participant should have a developed awareness of your body in space, and a mature understanding of the etiquette of collective dancing.)
