Gesture

Rockwell Kent: Gesture was a collaboration between the Fleming Museum and Hanna Satterlee, Nicole Dagesse, and Jessie Owens. The dancers immersed themselves in the artwork of Rockwell Kent and the Fleming architecture for eight weeks: exploring his artwork and improvising and rehearsing in public to create this experience.

Because we found so much inspiration in the immersive experience as dancers, we asked visitors to join this sense of immersion and exploration of the space with us. Audience was instructed to “Think of yourselves not as stationary spectators at a performance, but as visitors in a museum. The piece is recursive and iterative—much like the printing process—and so you’ll be rewarded for noticing repetition and variation.”

The performance took place on December 3, 2022.
